CDL Requirements in Wyoming (2026): Steps, Cost & Testing

Wyoming issues CDLs through WYDOT Driver Services. You hold a regular Wyoming license, pass the free knowledge tests for a $45 Commercial Learner Permit, hold it 14 days while completing ELDT, then take an $85 three-part skills test in a truck you supply — at a WYDOT driver license office. The CDL fee is $55 and a Wyoming CDL is valid 4 years.

State fees are modest and simple: $45 for the CLP, $85 for the skills test, and $55 for the CDL, which is valid 4 years. The bigger costs are ELDT tuition (estimated at roughly $4,000–$6,000, or about $5,750 for the Class A course at Laramie County Community College) and a DOT physical.

You bring your own truck to the skills test at a WYDOT office — the state does not furnish vehicles, and third-party examiners may only test their own students at no charge. For hazmat, Wyoming is not a self-managed state, so fingerprinting goes through a TSA/IdentoGO enrollment center.

Eligibility and documents in Wyoming

How to get your CDL: step by step

   Check eligibility, documents, and medical qualification

   Choose the CDL class and endorsements for your vehicle. Hold the required regular license and bring Wyoming identity, residency, and Social Security documents. Self-certify your operating category and complete a DOT physical before the permit if that category requires medical certification.

   Pass the knowledge tests and obtain your CLP

   Take general knowledge and the vehicle/endorsement tests that apply. ELDT theory may be taken earlier, but federal rules do not require it before the CLP. A first-time hazmat applicant must complete hazmat theory before the hazmat knowledge test; hazmat is not issued on a CLP.

   Complete required training and practice during the permit hold

   Hold the CLP for at least 14 days before the skills test. Use a qualified supervising driver for public-road practice. First-time Class A/B, B-to-A upgrades, and first-time P/S endorsements require applicable theory and behind-the-wheel ELDT from registered providers. The appropriate CLP is needed for public-road training. State training requirements may add to the federal baseline.

   Pass the skills test in the right vehicle

   Confirm ELDT completion is recorded, arrange the test and a representative vehicle, then complete vehicle inspection, basic control, and road driving. The vehicle and transmission you test in can restrict your license.

   Complete issuance and maintain your qualifications

   Pay the applicable Wyoming issuance fees and confirm the correct class, endorsements, restrictions, and expiration. Keep your medical status current when required and follow the agency’s renewal instructions.

Medical certification in Wyoming

Self-certify to one of the four operation categories when you apply, renew, or make a change. You must have a current DOT Medical Examiner's Certificate from an examiner on the National Registry to hold 'certified' status. WYDOT is National Registry II compliant: the medical provider transmits your certificate electronically to the state, so drivers no longer submit updates manually. If your card lapses: Failing to keep a current card on file changes your status to 'not-certified' and downgrades the CDL to a non-commercial license.

Skills testing in Wyoming

Wyoming allows approved third-party testers to administer the CDL skills test, with availability and fees set by the provider. WYDOT does not publish typical wait-time figures.

Your test vehicle: The State of Wyoming does not furnish vehicles. You must supply a CMV matching the license class you seek, meeting safety standards (no placarded or loaded commercial vehicles for the test).

Endorsements available in Wyoming

• HHazmat — Wyoming is NOT a TSA self-managed state. All hazmat applicants complete the federal TSA Security Threat Assessment, including fingerprinting at a TSA/IdentoGO (Universal Enroll) enrollment center — WYDOT directs applicants to universalenroll.dhs.gov (855-347-8371). Allow 30–60 days. First-time hazmat also requires ELDT-hazmat and the H knowledge test, applied in person; renewals must be done in person (not by mail) and repeat the assessment and knowledge test.
• NTanker — Tank vehicles.
• XHazmat + Tank — Combined tank + hazmat.
• PPassenger — Passenger (16+ persons, including the driver).
• SSchool Bus — School bus; requires the P endorsement, on a Class A or B.
• TDoubles/Triples — Double/triple trailers (Class A only).

CDL disqualifications

Disqualifying offenses are set by federal law (49 CFR 383.51) and apply in every state. Some also apply in a personal vehicle; vehicle-specific conditions matter. Wyoming applies the federal 49 CFR 383.51 framework. Its published rules include: serious violations (2+ in 3 years, e.g., speeding 15+ mph or following too closely) drawing 60–120 day disqualifications; a DUI in any vehicle or operating a CMV at 0.04% BAC drawing a 1-year disqualification (3 years with a placarded hazmat load), with a subsequent offense being a lifetime disqualification; and railroad-crossing violations of 60/120 days. Lifetime-disqualification relief may be requested after 10 years by written request to the Driver Services Program Manager, but it excludes hazmat eligibility and does not apply to multiple lifetime DQs or drug/human-trafficking felonies.

Military skills-test waiver

Check the temporary July 30–October 29, 2026 federal eligibility extension and ask the state whether it participates.

Wyoming waives the skills test for qualifying service members and recent veterans who operated a qualifying CMV as part of military duties within the past 12 months and hold a valid Wyoming license; knowledge (written) tests are not waived.
