The skills-test waiver
Qualifying recent military experience with comparable vehicles can support a state waiver of the CDL skills test. Federal criteria include at least two years of qualifying safe operation and qualifying military employment within the preceding year, with record and experience certifications. Eligibility and the state’s approval matter; military service alone does not grant a CDL.
Knowledge tests and Even Exchange
A skills-only waiver normally leaves the knowledge requirements in place. Participating states may offer an Even Exchange option for approved military occupational specialties and qualifying experience. Ask the state which program it offers and which endorsements and tests remain.
Documents and ELDT
Obtain the required service and commanding-officer certifications, identity and residency documents, and any required medical qualification. The federal ELDT exception for a military skills waiver depends on qualifying under the rule; confirm the waiver before purchasing training.
