Vermont CDL Practice Test and Test Prep (2026)
Vermont gives CDL tests through Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Here is what you will be tested on, which of our practice quizzes match each test, and what the skills test involves in Vermont.
Knowledge tests for a Vermont permit
- General Knowledge for the class applied for (all applicants) — practice General Knowledge (60 questions)
- Combination Vehicles (Class A) — practice Combination Vehicles (30 questions)
- Air Brakes (if applicable) — practice Air Brakes (40 questions)
- Any applicable endorsement tests (P, S, N, T)
Permit minimum age: 18 (in-state driving) or 21 (interstate). Holding period before the skills test: 14 days. Permit validity: 365 days.
Vermont endorsement tests and practice
- Hazmat (H) practice
Vermont notes for this endorsement
Vermont is NOT a TSA self-managed state. Hazmat runs through the federal TSA Security Threat Assessment via TSA Universal Enrollment Services (universalenroll.dhs.gov / 855-347-8371); you must start the assessment online or by phone at least 2 weeks before your fingerprint appointment, and TSA sends the result directly to the Vermont DMV. Notably, Vermont requires you to re-take the hazmat knowledge test at each CDL renewal, and hazmat is prohibited on a CLP.
- Tanker (N) practice
Vermont notes for this endorsement
Tank; on a CLP a tank-endorsement holder may operate only empty or purged tanks.
- Passenger (P) practice
Vermont notes for this endorsement
Passenger; on a CLP the holder may not carry passengers except examiners, trainees, or an accompanying CDL holder. ELDT required for first-timers.
- School bus (S) practice
Vermont notes for this endorsement
School bus (Type II); requires attending a Vermont school-bus clinic plus knowledge, vision, and skills tests and a medical form. A school-bus endorsement cannot be added to an out-of-state CDL. ELDT required for first-timers.
- Doubles/triples (T) practice
Vermont notes for this endorsement
Doubles/triples (standard federal endorsement; Vermont's pages don't call it out by letter individually).
The Vermont skills test
Components: Pre-trip vehicle inspection, Basic control / backing, On-road driving test.
Test vehicle: You must provide a vehicle representing the license class, with operable safety belts (school buses exempt), an empty cargo area or tank, and a passing inspection at the time of the test. Testing without air brakes results in an air-brake restriction on your license.
Where and how to book: Vermont's official pages describe skills testing by DMV Motor Vehicle Examiners only, with no mention of third-party testers — testing appears to be DMV-administered. Appointments are required (no walk-ins) and are booked at mydmv.vermont.gov or by phone; a $29 scheduling deposit must be paid before booking.
Waits and retests: Vermont does not publish official wait times. If you appear and pass, the $29 deposit applies to your license fee; a no-show forfeits it unless you cancel at least 48 hours ahead. If you fail three times you must wait 6 months to retake the test.
Practice the inspection part with our pre-trip inspection guide. Research dated 2026-10-12; confirm testing details with Vermont.
