Use the current state manual
States may use different approved skills-test formats. Download your state’s current manual and ask the testing provider which vehicle inspection format and aids are allowed. This checklist is a study organizer, not a substitute for hands-on training or the examiner’s scoring instructions.
Walk around systematically
Study the engine compartment and fluid levels; steering and suspension; brakes; tires, wheels, and hubs; lights, reflectors, and body; cargo security; and the coupling system if present. Practice explaining what you inspect and the condition that would make it unsafe. Secure the vehicle before each task.
Cab, controls, and brake checks
Review the seat belt, mirrors, windshield, gauges, warning devices, emergency equipment, and controls. Learn the exact parking, service, hydraulic, or air-brake procedures for the test vehicle from an instructor and the applicable manual. An unsafe sequence or failed brake check can end the test.
Practice a complete routine
Use a real representative vehicle with a qualified instructor. Repeat the sequence without skipping components, then practice explaining why each defect matters. Connect study to the air-brake and general-knowledge practice sets, and arrange a safe test vehicle before booking.
