New Jersey CDL Practice Test and Test Prep (2026)
New Jersey gives CDL tests through New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJ MVC). Here is what you will be tested on, which of our practice quizzes match each test, and what the skills test involves in New Jersey.
Knowledge tests for a New Jersey permit
- General Knowledge (50-question test, all applicants, 80% to pass) — practice General Knowledge (60 questions)
- Combination Vehicles (Class A) — practice Combination Vehicles (30 questions)
- Air Brakes (if your vehicle has them) — practice Air Brakes (40 questions)
- Any endorsement tests you need (P, S, H, N, T)
Permit minimum age: 18 (in-state driving) or 21 (interstate). Holding period before the skills test: 14 days. Permit validity: 180 days.
New Jersey endorsement tests and practice
- Hazmat (H) practice
New Jersey notes for this endorsement
New Jersey is NOT a TSA self-managed state. You pass the 30-question hazmat knowledge test (80% to pass, English only, ELDT required beforehand) at an MVC Driver Testing Center, then complete the TSA Security Threat Assessment — application and fingerprinting through TSA's enrollment vendor (IdentoGO / IDEMIA, formerly MorphoTrust), not the MVC. The endorsement is valid 4 years; renewal fingerprints are due at least 45 days before your CDL expires. Not available under age 21. The NJ MVC hazmat page states $85.25 for the entire TSA background-check process.
- Tanker (N) practice
New Jersey notes for this endorsement
Tank vehicles; knowledge test required.
- Passenger (P) practice
New Jersey notes for this endorsement
Passenger; requires ELDT for first-timers, and P/P/S holders must keep a Medical Examiner's Certificate on file regardless of commerce category. Not available under age 21. Effective September 1, 2026, a fingerprint receipt and/or completed results are required at CLP issuance for anyone requesting a P endorsement.
- School bus (S) practice
New Jersey notes for this endorsement
School bus; requires the passenger (P) path plus S knowledge and skills tests and ELDT for first-timers.
- Doubles/triples (T) practice
New Jersey notes for this endorsement
Double/triple trailers; knowledge test only, CDL required.
The New Jersey skills test
Components: Pre-trip vehicle inspection, Basic control skills, On-road (road skills) driving test.
Test vehicle: You must supply your own Commercial Motor Vehicle appropriate for the class sought — the MVC does not supply test vehicles. The vehicle needs a current inspection sticker, valid registration, valid insurance card, legible GVWR placards, and no cargo. An automatic-transmission vehicle triggers restriction code E.
Where and how to book: Skills (road) tests are administered by MVC safety specialists at MVC Driver Testing Centers; you schedule an appointment after holding the CLP at least 14 days. New Jersey has floated a CDL Testing Pilot Program to appoint three private third-party vendors (one each in the northern, central, and southern regions), but statewide third-party skills testing is not the standard route — confirm current availability with NJ MVC. If you fail the road test you must wait at least two weeks to retake it (the MVC may require six months after several failures); banked skills-test scores are valid for one 180-day CLP cycle.
Waits and retests: NJ MVC does not publish official CDL skills-test wait times; appointment availability at Driver Testing Centers varies by location and season. Many applicants schedule through a truck-driving school that coordinates the appointment.
Practice the inspection part with our pre-trip inspection guide. Research dated 2026-10-12; confirm testing details with New Jersey.
