Indiana CDL Practice Test and Test Prep (2026)
Indiana gives CDL tests through Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (Indiana BMV). Here is what you will be tested on, which of our practice quizzes match each test, and what the skills test involves in Indiana.
Knowledge tests for a Indiana permit
- General Knowledge (all applicants) — practice General Knowledge (60 questions)
- Combination Vehicles (Class A) — practice Combination Vehicles (30 questions)
- Air Brakes (if your vehicle has them) — practice Air Brakes (40 questions)
- Any endorsement tests you need (P, S, H, N, T)
Permit minimum age: 18 (in-state driving) or 21 (interstate). Holding period before the skills test: 14 days. Permit validity: 365 days.
Indiana endorsement tests and practice
- Hazmat (H) practice
Indiana notes for this endorsement
Hazardous materials. Indiana is NOT a TSA self-managed state, so hazmat fingerprinting and the TSA Security Threat Assessment go through the standard TSA enrollment process (IdentoGO / IDEMIA), not the BMV. You must complete the threat assessment (valid 5 years) before the endorsement is issued, and renewals require a new threat assessment. First-timers also need ELDT and the hazmat knowledge test.
- Tanker (N) practice
Indiana notes for this endorsement
Tank vehicle — tanks with individual capacity over 119 gallons and aggregate 1,000+ gallons.
- Passenger (P) practice
Indiana notes for this endorsement
Passenger transport (vehicles designed for 16+ occupants). Applicants under 21 cannot add a passenger endorsement. First-timers need ELDT.
- School bus (S) practice
Indiana notes for this endorsement
School bus. Requires the passenger path plus S knowledge and skills tests and ELDT for first-timers.
- Doubles/triples (T) practice
Indiana notes for this endorsement
Double/triple trailers (knowledge test only; no separate skills test).
The Indiana skills test
Components: Pre-trip inspection exam, Basic control skills exam, Road (on-road driving) test.
Test vehicle: You must provide a commercial vehicle representative of the class of CDL you are seeking; the BMV and third-party sites do not furnish a test vehicle unless the school you use provides one.
Where and how to book: Indiana administers the CDL skills exam through BMV-authorized third-party test sites, not at BMV branches. You must schedule your appointment with the approved third-party site at least two days before the exam date. The BMV publishes a statewide list of authorized third-party skills-test sites.
Waits and retests: The BMV publishes no official wait times; availability depends on the third-party site you choose. Booking through a truck-driving school that bundles testing often speeds scheduling. (Wait times are unverified planning observations, not an official BMV figure.)
Practice the inspection part with our pre-trip inspection guide. Research dated 2026-10-12; confirm testing details with Indiana.
