Washington CDL Practice Test and Test Prep (2026)
Washington gives CDL tests through Washington State Department of Licensing (DOL). Here is what you will be tested on, which of our practice quizzes match each test, and what the skills test involves in Washington.
Knowledge tests for a Washington permit
- General Knowledge (all applicants) — practice General Knowledge (60 questions)
- Combination Vehicles (Class A) — practice Combination Vehicles (30 questions)
- Air Brakes (if your vehicle has them) — practice Air Brakes (40 questions)
- Any endorsement tests you need (P, S, H, N, T)
Permit minimum age: 18 (in-state driving) or 21 (interstate). Holding period before the skills test: 14 days. Permit validity: 180 days.
Washington endorsement tests and practice
- Hazmat (H) practice
Washington notes for this endorsement
Washington is NOT a TSA self-managed state. You apply for the TSA Security Threat Assessment online at tsa.gov (or 855-347-8371) and are fingerprinted at a TSA/IdentoGO enrollment center — not at DOL. TSA notifies DOL directly. You also pass the hazmat knowledge test in person and, for first-time H, complete hazmat training from a WA-approved provider. Start the background check well ahead (processing can take up to 45 days).
- Tanker (N) practice
Washington notes for this endorsement
Tank vehicles (liquid/gas).
- Passenger (P) practice
Washington notes for this endorsement
Vehicles designed for 16 or more people including the driver.
- School bus (S) practice
Washington notes for this endorsement
School bus of any size; the cheaper $100 skills test (two attempts) applies. Requires ELDT for first-timers.
- Doubles/triples (T) practice
Washington notes for this endorsement
Double/triple trailers.
The Washington skills test
Components: Vehicle (pre-trip) inspection, Basic control skills, On-road driving test.
Test vehicle: You must supply your own CMV of the class you are testing for. It must be safe, unloaded, and free of all hazardous material; if you borrow it, bring a letter from the owner authorizing its use for the test.
Where and how to book: You can test at a DOL office or with an independent third-party examiner. Either way you must contact scheduling first — DOL examiner scheduling is 360-902-3785, and third-party examiners should be scheduled at least 3 days ahead.
Waits and retests: DOL publishes no official wait times. You must wait 14 calendar days after CLP issuance before the skills test, and 24 hours after passing before the CDL is issued.
Practice the inspection part with our pre-trip inspection guide. Research dated 2026-10-12; confirm testing details with Washington.
