Virginia CDL Practice Test and Test Prep (2026)

Virginia gives CDL tests through Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Here is what you will be tested on, which of our practice quizzes match each test, and what the skills test involves in Virginia.

Our practice questions are original and based on the national model CDL manual, not aVirginia-specific question bank or real exam questions. Passing practice does not guarantee a test result.Check Virginia requirements and source notes.

Virginia endorsement tests and practice

  • Hazmat (H) practice

Virginia is a TSA self-managed state. You are fingerprinted in-house at a DMV Customer Service Center equipped with fingerprinting equipment (not every office has it), and DMV forwards the check to TSA for the Security Threat Assessment. The fee is $83 with fingerprinting, or $41 on the TWIC comparability path. A hazmat endorsement cannot be transferred in from another state — you must complete Virginia's process. Background-check validity is up to 5 years; DMV mails a renewal notice about 90 days before expiration.

  • Tanker (N) practice

The Virginia skills test

Components: Pre-trip vehicle inspection, Basic vehicle control, On-road driving test.

Test vehicle: You must supply a properly registered vehicle of the class you wish to drive, with a valid safety-inspection sticker, plates/registration, and working brakes, seat belts, horn, lights, signals, mirrors, and speedometer.

Where and how to book: Virginia authorizes DMV-certified third-party CDL skills testers in addition to DMV testing (qualifying businesses, governmental entities, and Class A driver training schools). Contact your nearest CDL testing location for appointment availability. Third-party testers may also offer ELDT.

Waits and retests: Virginia does not publish official statewide wait times. The road test runs about 90 minutes; only the applicant and examiner may be in the vehicle, and only one attempt is allowed per business day.

Practice the inspection part with our pre-trip inspection guide. Research dated 2026-10-12; confirm testing details with Virginia.
