The Pennsylvania skills test
Components: Vehicle (pre-trip) inspection, Basic control skills (backing and maneuvering), On-road skills test.
Test vehicle: PennDOT Driver License Centers do not supply a test vehicle — you must provide a representative vehicle. Some third-party testers rent vehicles for an added fee.
Where and how to book: Schedule online ('Schedule a Road Skills Test') or by phone with a PennDOT Driver License Center or an authorized third-party tester. You can schedule right after passing a knowledge test, but the test can't occur until the 15-day permit hold is met.
Waits and retests: PennDOT doesn't publish wait times. estimated reality: large state centers (Philadelphia/Pittsburgh) often run 3–5 weeks, smaller centers 1–2 weeks; third-party testers often within 1–2 weeks for an added fee (~$250–$500).
Practice the inspection part with our pre-trip inspection guide. Research dated 2026-10-12; confirm testing details with Pennsylvania.
