Ohio CDL Practice Test and Test Prep (2026)
Ohio gives CDL tests through Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV). Here is what you will be tested on, which of our practice quizzes match each test, and what the skills test involves in Ohio.
Knowledge tests for a Ohio permit
- General Knowledge / class test (all applicants) — practice General Knowledge (60 questions)
- Combination Vehicles (Class A) — practice Combination Vehicles (30 questions)
- Air Brakes restriction removal (if applicable) — practice Air Brakes (40 questions)
- Any endorsement tests you need (P, S, H, N, T) — given at a Driver Exam station
Permit minimum age: 18 (in-state driving) or 21 (interstate). Holding period before the skills test: 14 days. Permit validity: 365 days.
Ohio endorsement tests and practice
- Hazmat (H) practice
Ohio notes for this endorsement
Requires passing a TSA Security Threat Assessment before the CDL is issued with the endorsement; Ohio is a self-managed TSA state, so you enroll directly with TSA. Renewing hazmat requires a fresh threat assessment.
- Tanker (N) practice
- Passenger (P) practice
Ohio notes for this endorsement
Requires ELDT plus a knowledge and skills test in a bus rated for 16+.
- School bus (S) practice
Ohio notes for this endorsement
Requires the passenger endorsement first, plus ELDT and its own knowledge and skills tests.
- Doubles/triples (T) practice
The Ohio skills test
Components: Pre-trip / vehicle inspection (30-minute limit), Basic control / maneuverability (40-minute limit), On-road driving test.
Test vehicle: You must supply a vehicle appropriate to the license class (a passenger endorsement requires a bus rated for 16+). Third-party sites may rent a vehicle.
Where and how to book: Knowledge tests are given at Ohio State Highway Patrol Driver Exam (DX) stations; skills tests at a state CDL exam station or an approved third-party site; the license itself is bought at a deputy registrar — three separate stops. Third-party testing is the norm in Ohio.
Waits and retests: State CDL skills stations are limited, so most volume flows through third-party schools. Ohio doesn't publish statewide wait times — confirm with the BMV or the individual site.
Practice the inspection part with our pre-trip inspection guide. Research dated 2026-07-20; confirm testing details with Ohio.
