Montana CDL Practice Test and Test Prep (2026)

Montana gives CDL tests through Montana Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) — Department of Justice. Here is what you will be tested on, which of our practice quizzes match each test, and what the skills test involves in Montana.

Our practice questions are original and based on the national model CDL manual, not aMontana-specific question bank or real exam questions. Passing practice does not guarantee a test result.Check Montana requirements and source notes.

Knowledge tests for a Montana permit

Montana endorsement tests and practice

  • Hazmat (H) practice
    Montana notes for this endorsement

Requires the hazmat knowledge test plus a TSA fingerprint-based Security Threat Assessment. Montana is NOT a TSA self-managed state — you use TSA's HAZPRINT process (or the TSA Driver Service Center, 855-347-8371) and complete fingerprinting through IdentoGO. DOJ will not issue, renew, upgrade, or convert a hazmat CDL until TSA reports that you passed.

  • Tanker (N) practice
    Montana notes for this endorsement

    Tank vehicles (aggregate 1,000+ gallons).

  • Passenger (P) practice
    Montana notes for this endorsement

Passenger (vehicles designed for 16+ including the driver); ELDT required for first-timers.

  • School bus (S) practice
    Montana notes for this endorsement

School bus; also requires the Passenger (P) endorsement; ELDT required for first-timers.

  • Doubles/triples (T) practice
    Montana notes for this endorsement

    Doubles/triples.

The Montana skills test

Components: Pre-trip vehicle inspection, Basic control skills, On-road driving test.

Test vehicle: You must provide a vehicle in good operating condition, currently registered and insured, that matches the class you are applying for and has seatbelts and passenger seating. You cannot take the skills test in a hazmat vehicle.

Where and how to book: Written and skills tests are given at driver license stations by appointment through online scheduling. Montana also offers CDL testing through Helena College (Missoula College/University of Montana runs a CDL program as well), so non-DMV testing options exist.

Waits and retests: Wait times depend on appointment availability at your station; Montana does not publish official queue figures.

Practice the inspection part with our pre-trip inspection guide. Research dated 2026-07-20; confirm testing details with Montana.
