Michigan CDL Practice Test and Test Prep (2026)
Michigan gives CDL tests through Michigan Department of State / Secretary of State (SOS). Here is what you will be tested on, which of our practice quizzes match each test, and what the skills test involves in Michigan.
Knowledge tests for a Michigan permit
- General Knowledge (Group A is 70 questions incl. a combination-vehicle portion; Groups B and C are 50 questions; 80% to pass) — practice Combination Vehicles (30 questions)
- Air Brakes (if applicable, 25 questions) — practice Air Brakes (40 questions)
- Any endorsement tests you need (T, P, S, N — 20 questions each; H — 30 questions)
Permit minimum age: 18 (in-state driving) or 21 (interstate). Holding period before the skills test: 14 days. Permit validity: confirm with the agency.
Michigan endorsement tests and practice
- Hazmat (H) practice
Michigan notes for this endorsement
Michigan is NOT a TSA self-managed state. You complete the hazmat ELDT and knowledge test (30 questions at an SOS office), and the fingerprinting/background check runs through TSA's Universal Enrollment Services via IdentoGO (preregister at the TSA enrollment site or 855-347-8371). The TSA background-check fee is $85.25 (federal; the SOS collects none of it). Apply 45–60 days ahead; TSA approval is valid 5 years, and the hazmat knowledge test must be retaken at every license renewal.
- Tanker (N) practice
Michigan notes for this endorsement
Tank; knowledge test only, no skills test, no ELDT.
- Passenger (P) practice
Michigan notes for this endorsement
Passenger (16+ incl. driver); knowledge and skills tests, and ELDT for first-timers.
- School bus (S) practice
Michigan notes for this endorsement
School bus; knowledge and skills tests, and ELDT for first-timers.
- Doubles/triples (T) practice
Michigan notes for this endorsement
Double/triple trailers; knowledge test only. Triple-trailer combinations are not permitted in Michigan.
The Michigan skills test
Components: Vehicle (pre-trip) inspection, Basic vehicle control skills, On-road driving test.
Test vehicle: You must supply an empty, representative-GVWR vehicle (with trailer if required) bearing a manufacturer's data plate, two permanently mounted seats with seat belts, valid registration, and proof of insurance. Testing without air brakes adds the 'L' restriction; an automatic transmission adds the 'E' restriction; a P-endorsement test needs a vehicle seating 16+.
Where and how to book: The State of Michigan does NOT administer the CDL driving-skills test — it's given only by public or private Driver Testing Businesses authorized by the SOS under the Michigan Vehicle Code. Locate one via the SOS 'Locate a driver testing business' tool or 888-SOS-MICH. Schedule at least 2 days ahead, and no sooner than 14 days after your CLP is issued. (Knowledge tests are still taken at SOS offices.)
Waits and retests: Skills-test fees are set by each business and are not regulated by the state, so availability and price vary by provider. Skills-test results are valid for 1 year.
Practice the inspection part with our pre-trip inspection guide. Research dated 2026-07-20; confirm testing details with Michigan.
