Maryland CDL Practice Test and Test Prep (2026)
Maryland gives CDL tests through Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration (MDOT MVA). Here is what you will be tested on, which of our practice quizzes match each test, and what the skills test involves in Maryland.
Knowledge tests for a Maryland permit
- CDL General Knowledge (all applicants) — practice General Knowledge (60 questions)
- Combination Vehicles (Class A) — practice Combination Vehicles (30 questions)
- Air Brakes (if your vehicle has them) — practice Air Brakes (40 questions)
- Any endorsement tests you need (P, S, H, N, T)
Permit minimum age: 18 (in-state driving) or 21 (interstate). Holding period before the skills test: 14 days. Permit validity: 180 days.
Maryland endorsement tests and practice
- Hazmat (H) practice
Maryland notes for this endorsement
Maryland is a TSA self-managed hazmat state. Fingerprinting is NOT done at a generic IdentoGO center — it's captured in-house at your MVA appointment, with the fee collected by Department of Public Safety & Correctional Services (DPSCS) staff and forwarded to Maryland CJIS for the background check, then TSA makes the final security-threat determination. Maryland charges a single $109.25 background-check fee plus the $30 hazmat endorsement, and first-timers must be fingerprinted and TSA-approved before taking the hazmat knowledge test. A hazmat CDL runs on a 5-year cycle.
- Tanker (N) practice
Maryland notes for this endorsement
Tank vehicles; knowledge test only.
- Passenger (P) practice
Maryland notes for this endorsement
Passenger; knowledge and skills tests required, plus a CLP.
- School bus (S) practice
Maryland notes for this endorsement
School bus; requires the P endorsement, plus S knowledge and skills tests and a new medical certificate annually. Triples are illegal in Maryland.
- Doubles/triples (T) practice
Maryland notes for this endorsement
Double/triple trailers; knowledge test only. (Triple-trailer operation is not legal in Maryland, but the endorsement can still be obtained.)
The Maryland skills test
Components: Pre-trip vehicle inspection (45-minute limit), Basic vehicle control skills (10 minutes per maneuver), On-road driving test.
Test vehicle: You must provide a safe representative vehicle matching the CDL class/type, with visible VIN plate(s), valid registration, and proof of insurance. Vehicles placarded for hazardous materials cannot be used. Rentals are allowed if you're named on the rental agreement.
Where and how to book: Schedule the skills test through your myMVA online account; tests are administered at MVA locations. Reschedule at least 24 hours ahead to avoid the $20 no-show fee. Maryland does not advertise a third-party CDL skills-testing program — the MVA administers the tests itself. Out-of-state skills-test results may be accepted via AAMVA CSTIMS.
Waits and retests: After a first skills failure you can retest the next business day; after a second or later failure, wait at least 7 calendar days. Any retest or no-show fee ($20) must be paid first.
Practice the inspection part with our pre-trip inspection guide. Research dated 2026-10-12; confirm testing details with Maryland.
