Maine CDL Practice Test and Test Prep (2026)
Maine gives CDL tests through Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV), Secretary of State. Here is what you will be tested on, which of our practice quizzes match each test, and what the skills test involves in Maine.

- Combination Vehicles (Class A) — practice Combination Vehicles (30 questions)
- Air Brakes (if your vehicle has them) — practice Air Brakes (40 questions)
- Any endorsement tests you need (P, S, H, N, T)
Permit minimum age: 18 (in-state driving) or 21 (interstate). Holding period before the skills test: 14 days. Permit validity: confirm with the agency.
Maine endorsement tests and practice
- Hazmat (H) practice
Maine notes for this endorsement
Maine is NOT a TSA self-managed state. You pay the $20 BMV endorsement fee, but the fingerprinting and TSA Security Threat Assessment are completed through the federal TSA program at a Universal Enroll / IdentoGO enrollment center (universalenroll.dhs.gov), not at the BMV. You must be 21 and hold a valid medical card.
- Tanker (N) practice
Maine notes for this endorsement
Tank vehicles; knowledge test, $20 endorsement fee.
- Passenger (P) practice
Maine notes for this endorsement
Passenger vehicles seating more than 15 (including operator); must be 21; requires knowledge and skills tests.
- School bus (S) practice
Maine notes for this endorsement
School bus (more than 15 passengers); must be 21 and have held a valid license one full year; requires ELDT plus knowledge and skills tests. Maine also issues a separate '3' credential for buses carrying 15 or fewer passengers (no CDL required, but must be 21 and pass the skill/road test).
- Doubles/triples (T) practice
Maine notes for this endorsement
Double/triple trailers (Class A only, where allowed by law); knowledge test only.
The Maine skills test
Components: Pre-trip vehicle inspection, Basic vehicle control, On-road driving test.
Test vehicle: You must supply a vehicle representative of the class of CDL you're seeking; the BMV does not provide a test vehicle. Federal rules prohibit interpreters during CDL testing (ASL translators are permitted).
Where and how to book: Skills tests are scheduled through the BMV CDL Examination Section (207-624-9000 ext. 52122). Maine uses BMV examiners and approved examiners; confirm current third-party options with the BMV. The road-test phase may be waived if you hold a valid out-of-state CDL.
Waits and retests: The BMV does not publish official wait times — confirm current scheduling with the CDL Examination Section.
Practice the inspection part with our pre-trip inspection guide. Research dated 2026-10-12; confirm testing details with Maine.
