Louisiana gives CDL tests through Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV). Here is what you will be tested on, which of our practice quizzes match each test, and what the skills test involves in Louisiana.

- Air Brakes (if your vehicle has them) — practice Air Brakes (40 questions)
- Any endorsement tests you need (P, S, H, N, T)
Permit minimum age: 18 (in-state driving) or 21 (interstate). Holding period before the skills test: 14 days. Permit validity: 180 days.
Louisiana endorsement tests and practice
- Hazmat (H) practice
Louisiana notes for this endorsement
Louisiana is NOT a TSA self-managed state, so hazmat fingerprinting and the TSA Security Threat Assessment go through the standard federal TSA enrollment process (IdentoGO/contracted vendor), not the OMV. You pass the hazmat knowledge test, complete ELDT if you've never held H, and the OMV new-CDL page cites an $85.25 TSA fingerprint/background fee processed through Integrated Biometric Technology (IBT). Confirm the current fee with TSA/the enrollment vendor.
- Tanker (N) practice
Louisiana notes for this endorsement
Tank vehicles; can be added on a CLP.
- Passenger (P) practice
Louisiana notes for this endorsement
Passenger; can be added on a CLP. First-time P requires ELDT.
- School bus (S) practice
Louisiana notes for this endorsement
School bus; requires the P endorsement plus S knowledge and skills tests, and ELDT for first-timers. Can be added on a CLP.
- Doubles/triples (T) practice
Louisiana notes for this endorsement
Double/triple trailers (CDL only); knowledge test only, no skills test.
The Louisiana skills test
Components: Pre-trip vehicle inspection, Basic vehicle control skills, On-road driving test.
Test vehicle: You must provide a commercial vehicle representative of the class of CDL you are seeking; testers generally do not supply one unless bundled with a school. Confirm vehicle requirements with your tester.
Where and how to book: The OMV does not administer the CDL skills test at its own offices — you schedule it with an OMV-approved third-party CDL skills test provider. The OMV publishes a list of approved testers; contact one directly to book.
Waits and retests: The OMV publishes no official wait times; availability depends on the private tester you choose. Using a school that bundles training with testing usually speeds scheduling. estimated third-party skills-test pricing runs around $100.
Practice the inspection part with our pre-trip inspection guide. Research dated 2026-10-12; confirm testing details with Louisiana.
