Kansas CDL Practice Test and Test Prep (2026)
Kansas gives CDL tests through Kansas Department of Revenue, Division of Vehicles. Here is what you will be tested on, which of our practice quizzes match each test, and what the skills test involves in Kansas.
Knowledge tests for a Kansas permit
- General Knowledge (all applicants) — practice General Knowledge (60 questions)
- Combination Vehicles (Class A) — practice Combination Vehicles (30 questions)
- Air Brakes (if your vehicle has them) — practice Air Brakes (40 questions)
- Any endorsement tests you need (P, S, H, N, T)
Permit minimum age: 18 (in-state driving) or 21 (interstate). Holding period before the skills test: 14 days. Permit validity: confirm with the agency.
Kansas endorsement tests and practice
- Hazmat (H) practice
Kansas notes for this endorsement
Hazmat. Kansas is NOT a TSA self-managed state, so fingerprinting and the TSA Security Threat Assessment go through the standard TSA enrollment vendor (IdentoGO), not the Division of Vehicles. You pass the 30-question hazmat knowledge test (80% to pass) and complete ELDT for first-timers; interstate/hazmat drivers must be 21.
- Tanker (N) practice
Kansas notes for this endorsement
Tank vehicles; requires the tank knowledge test.
- Passenger (P) practice
Kansas notes for this endorsement
Passenger; requires ELDT for first-timers plus the passenger knowledge and skills tests.
- School bus (S) practice
Kansas notes for this endorsement
School bus; requires the passenger (P) endorsement, ELDT for first-timers, and the S knowledge and skills tests.
- Doubles/triples (T) practice
Kansas notes for this endorsement
Double/triple trailers; knowledge test only (CDL, no separate skills test).
The Kansas skills test
Components: Pre-trip vehicle inspection, Basic vehicle control skills, On-road driving test.
Test vehicle: You must supply a commercial vehicle representative of the class of CDL you are seeking — the state does not provide a test vehicle. Confirm any vehicle/inspection requirements with your testing office.
Where and how to book: CDL skills exams are by appointment only at Division of Vehicles CDL testing offices — call the office you will visit to schedule. The DOR lists 11 CDL skills testing offices (Chanute, Colby, Dodge City, Edgerton, Garden City, Hays, Phillipsburg, Salina, Seneca, Topeka, Wichita); Edgerton and Topeka note limited staff for written exams. K.S.A. 8-2,133(b)-(c) allows the Secretary of Revenue to authorize third parties, and requires authorizing community and technical colleges on request, to administer the skills test; confirm current third-party options with the Division of Vehicles.
Waits and retests: Kansas publishes no official wait times; availability depends on the office and CDL examiner scheduling. A skills test can take one to one-and-a-half hours. Booking ahead is essential because not every office has a CDL examiner on any given day.
Practice the inspection part with our pre-trip inspection guide. Research dated 2026-10-12; confirm testing details with Kansas.
