School-bus driver licensing checklist
Follow the license, training, endorsement, and employer screening steps for school-bus work.
Source review: September 30, 2026. Confirm your individual transaction with the licensing agency.
Choose the class and endorsements
Select Class A, B, or C using the actual vehicle ratings and design. School-bus drivers generally need both P and S endorsements. State or district requirements can add background checks, training, medical standards, and age conditions beyond federal licensing.
Complete training and practice
For a first P or S endorsement, complete the corresponding ELDT through a registered provider before the skills test. Obtain the appropriate CLP for public-road practice and follow its restrictions: student transportation is not ordinary permit practice. Confirm the supervision and passenger limits.
Test in the intended bus
Use a representative bus so the resulting credential covers the class and equipment you will drive. Testing addresses bus inspection, loading and unloading, railroad crossings, emergency procedures, and safe operation. Ask the district about hiring clearance separately from licensing.
